You can receive a great deal from this yoga—but first, you’ll need to take a step in, build a connection, and offer what you genuinely have to give.
This is not simply an exercise class.
It is an entry point into the deeper practice of yoga—one that invites sincerity, attention, and the willingness to explore more than just the body.
“I tried one other class before AYS when starting, and I felt like I’d accidentally turned up at an Instagram photo shoot. The moment I walked through the door at AYS I knew I’d found the right place. Straight away. The difference was immediate and palpable.” – B.T 2023
“Richards words of encouragement to bring yoga back into my daily life has seriously helped me mentally and physically. I let go of 6kgs of unwanted weight just in the 5 weeks step one classes. While I might have a way to go, I’m on the path with a teacher that cares and promotes my daily growth. Thanks Ashtanga Yoga Shala.” – B.I 2024
Why choose Ashtanga Yoga Shala near Toowong?
Most yoga on offer today is a blend of techniques, trends, and personal interpretations. What I offer at Ashtanga Yoga Shala is something very different: a clear, time-tested method, taught slowly, carefully, and with respect for each student’s starting point.
Classes at the Shala aren’t large, anonymous entertainment sessions. In the beginning, students follow clear, precise instructions, so they gain confidence and familiarity with the method. Once the basic principles are understood and demonstrated, students then begin to work at their own pace, under the teacher’s guidance, and in an environment that values consistency, humility, and attention to detail.
The practice is structured but not rigid; traditional but not museum-like; accessible but not diluted.
Ashtanga is a step-by-step practice where breath, movement, and attention are woven together in a very specific way. When it is taught properly, the practice becomes personal, rather than performative, or for show – something you grow into and grow with, steadily over time.
What you’ll learn with me
- Breath first – Before anything else, we establish correct breathing – steady, quiet, and unforced. This becomes the anchor for everything that follows.
- A progressive method, not a performance – Each movement prepares the next. Details are added only when earlier steps have settled. This prevents confusion, strain, and the habit of rushing.
- Attention and inner stability – Drishti (focus points) and Bandha (internal support) are introduced gradually. These cultivate clarity and steadiness just as much as strength or flexibility.
- A living tradition taught in a way that makes sense today – My own practice and study go back many decades, through the direct line of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, via Iain Clark. What I teach is grounded in that tradition, yet delivered in a way that is accessible, respectful, and true to the spirit of yoga.

Step 1 Ashtanga Yoga Classes:
Keeping in mind that ‘The correct preparation for any journey is all important’:
Step 1 Ashtanga Yoga classes are provided for –
- beginners to yoga,
- newcomers to Ashtanga Yoga,
- Ashtanga Yoga practitioners returning to the practice after a long break
- and students from other Ashtanga Yoga Schools in Australia or overseas, commencing classes at Ashtanga Yoga Shala, Brisbane.
This is a guided class designed to introduce newcomers to Ashtanga Yoga, as well as introduce those experienced in other styles of Yoga, to the basic principles of Ashtanga Yoga. The class also serves to help the teacher observe and assess the manner in which more experienced students can follow instructions and demonstrate alignment and correct vinyasa technique.
Whilst a reasonable level of fitness is encouraged, you need not be flexible or particularly strong to begin. You do, however, need to be able to move with ease from a standing to a sitting position. The purpose of the Step 1 class is to establish important, fundamental components of Ashtanga Yoga.
Step 1 Students are required to book into classes (‘Step 1 Class Series’).
After the initial 5 x week (one class per week) Step 1 Series program, students can book into another, 5 x week program to build confidence and familiarity with the principles or move into a ‘Mysore Style Class’ if they have completed the program requirements and feel ready.

Mysore Style Class
‘Continuing the Journey’ – the traditional class format for developing a real yoga practice.
Prerequisite: your ability to memorise and work through the Ashtanga Yoga Shala Step 1 practice sequence and have completed the work for the Step 1 class.
Mysore Style is an individually instructed, self-paced class that continues on from the Step 1 Class Series. Here, students with varying ranges of experience practise together, demonstrating regular and committed yoga practice and their ability to integrate new instructions under the guidance and encouragement of the teacher.
This is the traditional class format and the most effective method for developing a yoga practice.
There are various class attendance options available to the Mysore style students, depending on the frequency of attendance.
Attendance at Mysore Style Class is by class bookings only.
(All new enquiries to Ashtanga Yoga Shala will receive information about the Step 1 Class Series, not the Mysore Class Timetable, as Step 1 Class is the required starting point. Current Mysore students who have misplaced their timetable are welcome to request the current Mysore Class Schedule at any time).

Where to find ashtanga yoga
The Ashtanga Yoga Shala Paddington studio is located at 10 Moreton St, Paddington QLD 4064, placing it in one of Brisbane’s most inviting inner-city neighbourhoods. Set just moments from Given Terrace and Latrobe Terrace, the studio sits among cafés, boutiques, and local amenities, offering a calm and convenient place to unwind and practise before or after your day.
Paddington is only a few minutes from surrounding suburbs — around 3 minutes from Rosalie, 5 minutes from Red Hill, and roughly 8 minutes from Bardon. For those travelling a little further, the studio is approximately 10 minutes from the Brisbane CBD and about 12 minutes from Milton or Auchenflower. Parking options are available throughout the neighbourhood, making it easy to arrive and settle into your practice without stress.
This central Paddington location makes the Shala accessible for students across Brisbane’s inner-west who want a traditional, mindful, and community-oriented Ashtanga experience without needing to travel far. Whether you’re coming from Petrie Terrace, Kelvin Grove, or Toowong, you’ll find Richard’s space simple to reach — a peaceful retreat nestled within one of Brisbane’s most character-filled suburbs.

Experience a Supportive and Welcoming Yoga Community near Toowong
One of the most appreciated qualities of practising with Ashtanga Yoga Shala is the genuine warmth that surrounds Richard’s teaching space. Students from Toowong often speak of the yoga hall as a quiet refuge — a place where effort and ease sit side by side, and where the practice feels both grounding and expansive. Individuals travel from nearby suburbs such as St Lucia, Auchenflower, Taringa, and Milton, drawn together by a shared intention to move with awareness and cultivate a deeper connection to themselves.
Each class retains an intimate, personal feel — something many students say sets Richard apart from larger, commercial studios. Every person is greeted by name, and Richard takes the time to understand each student’s journey, their strengths, and the subtle areas where guidance may support growth. Whether you attend a Mysore-style class, easing steadily through your own sequence, or the Step 1 Class Series that guides you breath by breath, the experience is shaped with careful attention to your body and your stage of practice.
Over time, regular practice with Richard may help you build resilience, soften stress, and anchor a sense of steadiness that follows you well beyond the mat. Students in Toowong often find that the discipline of Ashtanga becomes more than a physical routine — it’s a way of living with presence, purpose, and compassion.

What makes Ashtanga Unique?

How do I book in for the ashtanga yoga classes?
Send an email requesting the latest class times and information
I am pregnant. Is it ok for me to start yoga class?
Yes, but you would need to enquire into other schools which offer specific classes for pregnant women. The AYS Step 1 Class Series is not suitable for pregnant women.
What is the Step 1 Class Series?
Step 1 is a structured, gradual, and progressive Series of classes running one class a week over 5 x weeks. The Series presents some essential foundation work necessary in this method of Yoga. It allows the teacher to observe each student on a weekly basis and assess their progress. Step 1 Class Series is not the ‘Yoga Chikitsa’ or the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series.
I have an injury or existing medical condition.
If you’re working with an injury or medical condition, it’s important to first check with your health practitioner to confirm that you’re ready to begin yoga classes.
Can I try just one class out in case I don’t like it?
To be fair to the method, the teacher, and the other students, it’s important to attend all 5 x Step 1 classes in order. Each session builds on the last, and only then can you genuinely understand the approach and make an informed decision.
I have been practicing Hatha Yoga / “Vinyasa Yoga” already for some time, so do I really need an introductory class?
Yes. Everyone begins with the AYS Step 1 Class Series. You are now learning a specific, traditional method of application and there is an extensive range of checks and balances in place at Ashtanga Yoga Shala.
Many modern yoga classes use improvised sequences and personalised interpretations, which do not reflect correctly structured vinyasa yoga. Step 1 ensures that all students – regardless of previous experience- learn the principles correctly, safely, and in the right order.
If you are already competent in these principles, the teacher will be evaluating your application, and your transition into Mysore class will be straightforward. But Step 1 is the correct place to begin.
Is there a trial class available?
No. A “trial class” is a marketing device, and Ashtanga Yoga Shala does not operate on gimmicks. What I offer here is real yoga, taught with care and decades of continuity. The classes are already priced fairly for the amount of work involved.
A student of yoga is encouraged to reflect on “Asteya” – the principle that honours appropriate exchange, integrity, and not seeking something for nothing.
