About Ashtanga Yoga

Yoga has long stood as one of humanity’s timeless quests – a journey to uncover meaning and glimpse the mystery behind appearances.
It is not merely exercise, but a process of self-discovery and transformationSincere application of Yoga provides the opportunity for personal transformation by gradually dissolving the physical, mental and emotional ‘impediments’ that restrict our life potential.

In a city of Southern India, there was a remarkable Yogi involved in the practice and teaching of a unique, meticulous and assiduously applied method of Haṭha Yoga for well over 60 years. His name was Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. What he shared became known the world over as Ashtanga Vinyāsa Yoga. This Ashtanga Vinyasa method of sequencing yoga-asana with the ‘vinyāsa’ connecting movements was once advised and outlined by an Indian sage – Vāmana Ṛiṣhi.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is renowned for its breath-focused movement patterns and the harmonious sequencing of asana. Through this method, each asana unfolds into another, linked by specific ‘vinyāsa’ (the synchronised movement-breathing system) in a organised cycle, involving the application of specific muscular activations (‘bandhas’), gaze points (‘dṛiṣhṭi’) and the soothing, ‘ujjāyī’ breath. These posture sequences are energetic and challenging, cleansing the body, quieting the mind and releasing your inner potential.

The Ashtanga Yoga practice design has been likened to a ‘mālā’ or garland of beautiful flowers. Herein, the yoga postures are described similarly to those flowers, each posture being linked, like an ornate flower, on the thread of the breath. This practice is known as the ‘Yoga Mālā.

When approached with steadiness and devotion, this “Yoga Mālā” becomes not only a practice of movement, but a moving meditation through which awareness deepens, and life itself becomes the field of yoga.

Brisbane's Home of Ashtanga Yoga

Where tradition lives, and practice grows. For over three decades, Ashtanga Yoga Shala has been Brisbane’s longest-established home of Ashtanga Yoga – a place where yoga is taught as it was intended: steady, personal, and true.

Ashtanga Yoga Shala stands for reliability and for providing quality yoga instruction with depth and understanding. The Shala was originally established through the efforts of Iain Clark. Iain is one of a small number of Australians who were personally certified in India, by the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.

Here, practice unfolds gradually, with sincerity, and the respect due for the tradition.

Today, classes are led by Richard Clark, who trained under Iain Clark through an intensive three-year teacher-training program, and has been teaching for over twenty-five years. Richard represents another generation of Yoga Teachers in this tradition – maintaining the integrity, depth, and care that Ashtanga Yoga deserves.

At Ashtanga Yoga Shala you will be exposed to caring instruction from a yoga teacher who will instruct with:

  • Rooted in kindness and compassion
  • Supported by technical clarity and precision
  • Designed for  long-term growth and self-understanding
  • Informed by a wider vision of yoga than exercise alone

This is a space for sincere practice — where each student is met as an individual, and where yoga continues to be a path of discovery, refinement, and transformation.

“I tried one other class before AYS when starting, and I felt like I’d accidentally turned up at an Instagram photo shoot. The moment I walked through the door at AYS I knew I’d found the right place. Straight away. The difference was immediate and palpable.” – B.T 2023

The Benefits of Ashtanga Yoga Shala Classes for Brisbane Residents.

City life in Brisbane, and modern life for that matter, moves along at speed, with ceaseless demands – whether with work, study, and family commitments. This often leaves little room for self-nurturing, which means exercising the body and mind, refection, personal enrichment, rest and recovery. Ashtanga Vinyasa can feed into all these needs.

Many locals are turning to Ashtanga Yoga Shala to restore balance, build strength, and cultivate awareness amidst the busyness of urban life. Whether you live in the inner city or surrounding suburbs, these yoga classes offer a space to become present, breathe deeply, and reconnect with what truly matters.

Beginners and new students will experience the Step 1 classes as a thoughtful and structured introduction to the Ashtanga method, while more experienced students value the focus and discipline of the Mysore-style class practice. Each class combines breath, movement, and focus, to create a sense of calm and clarity that extends into the world. Many Brisbane students find that regular practice helps reduce stress, sharpen concentration, and improve overall wellbeing.

Join one of the upcoming classes and experience why Brisbane residents continue to choose Ashtanga Yoga Shala for an authentic, reliable approach to yoga and self-care.

The Ashtanga Yoga Shala Ethos

The Ashtanga Yoga Shala logo takes inspiration from the ancient ‘endless knot’ and softens into a heart-like form. Its hues from the marigold flower: golden yellow and deep orange – evoke the flowers traditionally offered in India, symbolising devotion, warmth, and sacred giving. The intertwining lines express the truth of interconnectedness, where no strand exists alone, but each supports and completes the whole. As a symbol, it represents love, compassion, inclusiveness, and continuity of practice. Just as yoga weaves body, breath, and mind into unity, this emblem reflects the Shala’s offering: a space of sacred connection, where practice is lived as devotion and relationship.

  • Sacred Offering: like marigold flowers on an altar, yoga is an offering of heart and presence. Yoga is not something consumed but something offered.
  • Inclusiveness: all paths and people are welcomed into the fabric of practice. The knot reminds us that yoga unites all aspects of life into wholeness.
  • Continuity: the endless loop reflects the timeless tradition of yoga, ever-renewing. Continuity also means sustainability: practice is not a sprint but a lifelong path.
  • Compassion and Love in Action: the heart-shaped flow points toward kindness in practice and community. Practice becomes a living expression of love, woven through discipline and devotion.
  • Interconnectedness: Every thought shapes a mood, every mood shapes an action, and every action leaves an impression: a reminder that our practice is not for ourselves alone, but for how we show up in relationship, family, work, and the world.

FAQs – Ashtanga Yoga Brisbane

Do I need prior yoga experience to join your Yoga Classes?

No. Experience isn’t required. The Ashtanga Yoga Shala Step Class Series is designed specifically for beginners as well as experienced yogis who are new to Ashtanga. This ensures everyone starts with the same foundation in breath, sequencing, and alignment before moving into the next level and ongoing classes.

Ashtanga Yoga Shala encourages full commitment to the program so you gain the maximum benefit from consistent practice. If you can’t attend all five sessions in sequence, it’s best to enrol in the next available Step 1 Series rather than starting midway.

Yes. Both the Paddington and Sunnybank Studios have free street parking available at each location, making it easy for students to attend after work, study, or family commitments.

Ashtanga Yoga is both. The practice builds strength, mobility, and endurance similar to exercise, but it also extends beyond the physical. Students often find improvements in focus, stress management, and overall well-being. The combination of postures, breathing techniques, and philosophy creates a holistic discipline that supports long-term lifestyle changes.
